Canacar is calling for a larger budget for roads.

Augusto Ramos Melo, President of the National Chamber of Freight Transportation (Canacar), has asked Congress to approve a budget of between 1 and 3% for the rehabilitation and modernization of highways.

“The ideal budget that the freight transportation industry is seeking is between 1 percent and 3 percent of (total government spending) for highway maintenance and modernization,” the business leader said.

In addition the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transportation (SICT) has reportedly also submitted a budget request for the modernization, maintenance, and rehabilitation of highways; now, CANACAR will seek to work closely with representatives and senators to ensure that the funds are approved.

Ramos Melo declares the road infrastructure and maintenance are necessary to ensure the safe transport of export and import goods, additionally, The ministry's officials are experts in road maintenance, therefore, lawmakers are expected to approve the budget. Likewise, companies affiliated with Canacar have also been advocating for members of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate to approve the modernization, rehabilitation, and maintenance of highways.

The president of Canacar states that they are working jointly with federal government security authorities to ensure that the industry is not targeted by roadblocks set up by criminal organizations. He notes that the main challenges facing the sector continue to be the theft of goods and criminal roadblocks.
