Canaco Seeks to Reactivate Puebla Airport Customs Terminal.

Following the departure of CLA PBC, the company that operated the customs terminal at Puebla International Airport (AIP) for 18 years, the National Chamber of Commerce (Canaco) is now seeking a new operator capable of driving growth in local exports of products within the state, rather than having them shipped to Mexico City or the State of Mexico.

Héctor Landero Camacho, president of the agency, has highlighted the airport's importance in increasing customs operations, including imports.

He pointed out that a better strategy is needed than the previous one, since companies in Puebla felt it was more expensive to export from the state than from another airport. He noted that companies in Puebla have chosen to export and import through the Mexico City International Airport (AICM) or the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA).

“At this time, there has been no impact from the closure of the customs facility, since it has only been closed for a month and a half and was not used by companies in Puebla. However, I believe that as we see more domestic and international flights, it would be important to reopen it,” he added.

However, with the 12 new routes that have recently begun operations from the AIP, Landero Camacho has noted that they are increasing the options available to companies in Puebla for exporting. The Canaco leader also emphasized the importance of taking advantage of the international routes operated by Volaris and United Airlines from Puebla to the United States.

It has been noted that Mexico’s National Customs Agency (ANAM) will explore the possibility of reopening the customs inspection facility. However, this will have to be done in coordination with the Tax Administration System (SAT).
