Car Sales in Mexico Mark Six Consecutive Months of Growth

The Mexican automotive market ended August with moderate sales growth, recording a preliminary total of 129,479 units—a 2.3% increase compared to the eighth month of last year.

Competition among dealers and auto finance providers is such that deliveries of light- and medium-duty vehicles—both commercial and passenger—have shown increases in every month of this year with the exception of February.

Due to this trend, cumulative sales from January through August reached a record volume of 1,014,832 units, representing a 4.7% increase—or 45,447 more vehicles—compared to the same period in 2025.

According to INEGI records, this is the first time that new-car dealers nationwide have sold more than one million units in the first eight months of the year.

It is worth noting that this report excludes major competitors who choose to keep their sales volumes in Mexico confidential; among them are several Chinese brands, including BYD, as well as the U.S.-based Tesla.

Top Performers of the Month

Among the brands included in the tally, Geely’s results stand out: with nearly 4,300 units delivered, it achieved a triple-digit increase (106.7%) compared to the same month in 2025.

The Chinese automaker has sold more than 31,600 vehicles so far in 2026, a figure that is 200.6% higher than last year’s result.

It was also a good month for Renault, whose sales volume of nearly 3,100 units exceeded that of August 2025 by 24.8%.

The French automaker has delivered 23,789 vehicles so far this year, a result that is 18.2% higher than that of the January–August period last year.

Mazda, the country’s sixth-largest brand in terms of market share, posted a monthly increase of 16.8%, selling 9,258 cars and pickup trucks.

The Hiroshima-based company has sold 70,115 units so far this year, a figure that is 3.7% higher than that of the first eight months of 2025.

Hyundai joined the positive trend with sales of nearly 4,900 vehicles in August, a result that is 11.8% higher than a year ago.

The South Korean automaker’s cumulative deliveries in 2026 grew 5.2% compared to last year, exceeding 36,100 vehicles.

Finally, the latest double-digit result came from Toyota, whose monthly sales volume rose by 11.4%, with sales of nearly 10,900 cars and trucks, including passenger and commercial vehicles.

The Japanese automaker has delivered just over 84,000 units from January through August, representing a 4.5% increase compared to the same period last year.

With this result, the world’s largest automaker by sales volume remains in fourth place in Mexico, with a market share of 8.3%.

Leaders on the Decline

Nissan remains the undisputed leader in terms of sales volume; however, its August deliveries declined by 5.4%, totaling 22,388 vehicles.

With this result, the Japanese automaker has sold nearly 173,000 units so far this year, a figure that represents a slight decline of -1.5%—or a loss of one percentage point in market share compared to the first month of the year, when it held an 18% share.

General Motors, ranked second, reported flat performance in the eighth month of the year with 17,000 units delivered.

Nevertheless, the Detroit giant has sold more than 130,100 vehicles so far this year, a volume that is 2% higher than in 2025.

Volkswagen, the third-largest brand in terms of sales, recorded a 4.5% increase in August, selling 14,663 vehicles, including its Audi, SEAT, Porsche, and Bentley brands.

The German automaker has delivered nearly 111,900 units between January and August, representing a 3.2% increase.

Despite these results, both Volkswagen and General Motors have each lost two-tenths of a percentage point in market share this year.
