Clautmet Sees Major Electromobility Growth Potential

The Metropolitan Automotive Cluster (Clautmet), which includes Mexico City, the State of Mexico, and Hidalgo, has become the region with the greatest potential for electromobility development in Mexico, driven by its market size, production capacity, and supplier ecosystem, said Antonio Hernández, marketing director at Mundi.

The first opportunity lies in after-sales services, as nearly 40% of electric vehicles sold since 2018 are on the road in the region. “We need to offer them maintenance services, diagnostics, and battery replacement and disposal,” Hernández said. Additional opportunities include residential and fleet charging infrastructure, insurance, and vehicle financing.

The second opportunity lies in the heavy-duty vehicle segment. “Clautmet has a unique ecosystem for manufacturing electric buses, such as the Taruk, which is produced in Ciudad Sahagún,” he said.

According to Hernández, the greatest opportunity lies in developing local suppliers. “Some 67% of electric vehicle production is supplied by companies in the Bajío region and northern Mexico, while the metropolitan area lacks local suppliers. There are virtually no suppliers of power electronics, high-voltage wiring harnesses, thermal management systems, or fuel cells. There is one factory, but it is clearly not enough.”

He noted that this is where the cluster can have the greatest impact by fostering the development of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the electrical sector and expanding the local value-added supplier base. Advancing electromobility requires an integrated ecosystem encompassing specialized components, maintenance services, trained personnel, and charging infrastructure.
