Domestic consumption in Mexico remains robust

The Confederation of National Chambers of Commerce, Services, and Tourism (CONCANACO-SERVYTUR) stated that it expects Mexico’s domestic consumption to strengthen and maintain sustained momentum in the second half of 2026.

At a press conference, Octavio de la Torre de Steffano, head of the private-sector organization, explained that consumption continues to strengthen, primarily in local commerce and small businesses operating within communities. He emphasized that much of this momentum comes from the informal economy, although the cash flow directly benefits the domestic market.

The CONCANACO president noted that consumption accounts for nearly 72% of gross domestic product (GDP) and is the true engine of the national economy.

Among the factors sustaining consumption, he cited three main ones: the slight recovery in consumer confidence, which reached 43.8 points in June; the steady flow of remittances, which totaled US$5.6 billion in May; and the strength of the retail sector, which continues to show annual growth.
