Fermachem, investing US$1.1 billion in Durango

Fermachem, a major infrastructure and petrochemical project in Mexico, has launched its nitrogen fertilizer plant in Lerdo, Durango—a world-class industrial project aimed at strengthening Mexico’s food security, reducing dependence on imported fertilizers, and driving economic and social development in the region.

This represents an investment of over US$1.1 billion in domestic and foreign private capital. It is expected to generate approximately 3,000 jobs during the construction phase and, once operational, around 260 permanent jobs, prioritizing local technical staff and specialists.

The plant will have the capacity to produce high-quality fertilizers for agricultural use, with an estimated output of one million tons per year—equivalent to 2,860 tons per day—and is expected to begin operations in 2029.

The project will strengthen national production capacity for a strategic agricultural input; having fertilizer production in Mexico is a necessary condition for advancing toward greater food security and providing greater certainty to the country’s producers.
