Ford confirmed that a new compact pickup, smaller than the Ranger, is currently in the works, but it’s still unknown if it will reach the U.S. market, AutoNews reported (subscription required).
“Ford is investing in more affordable versions of our truck business and you can expect new nameplates below where we compete today,” said Jim Farley, Ford president of global markets, during an auto industry conference in Detroit.
The statement comes after reports about the Dearborn automaker considering a small, unibody pickup whose production would be allocated at the company’s assembly plant in Hermosillo, Sonora.
The truck might be named “Courier,” a nameplate Ford has used in the past for a small pickup sold in markets such as Brazil and Mexico, but also the Mazda-based compact pickup truck that Ford sold in the United States throughout the 1970s and early 1980s.
