As Tesla webcasted the debut of its Model Y last week, Ford Motor Company took on Twitter to tease about its weapon of choice to compete against the upcoming crossover from the electric car company headed by Elon Musk.

“Hold your horses,” the tweet read, accompanied by a blue Mustang logo, with an effect as if it were a neon sign.

Although the announcement was quickly misinterpreted as the upcoming launch of an electric Mustang, Ford executives confirmed to CNBC this week that the tweet cues the Dearborn automaker's proposal is inspired by the muscle car.

The electric vehicle, Ford confirmed again this week, will be manufactured at the CuautitlĂĄn-Izcalli plant, in the state of Mexico, although some electric vehicle production will also take place in Michigan in the coming years.

The car is expected to feature a 300-mile range and will arrive in showrooms next year.
