GMC Jimmy Returns to Compete in the Off-Road Niche

Detroit giant General Motors (GM) has revived plans for an off-road model that it will launch under the once-popular GMC Jimmy brand to compete in this growing niche of the U.S. market.

According to a report by GM Authority, development of the vehicle began nearly a decade ago in response to the eventual launch of the Ford Bronco, with a model based on the same body-on-frame architecture used to produce the GMC Canyon and Chevrolet Colorado midsize pickups.

The initiative was canceled in November 2018 amid a difficult restructuring—which involved layoffs and plant closures—aimed at raising sufficient capital for future electrification and autonomous driving strategies.

However, GM resumed the project due to the lack of success of those decisions, coupled with the Trump administration’s relaxation of regulations on emissions and fuel economy.

To ensure the program’s financial viability, the vehicle will be marketed exclusively under the GMC luxury brand, unlike the rest of this division’s trucks, which have counterparts in the Chevrolet lineup.

With this move, the American automaker aims to attract both consumers seeking capable vehicles and those looking to project a certain “lifestyle,” who purchase the top-of-the-line versions of the Ford Bronco, Jeep Wrangler, or Toyota Land Cruiser.

The vehicle will benefit from recent improvements to the 2.7-liter inline-four TurboMax engines, as well as the sixth-generation 5.5-liter V8 engines that debuted in the 2027 Chevy Camaro and will also power GM’s next-generation light-duty pickups set to debut later this year.

The report does not mention a tentative date for the new GMC Jimmy’s market debut.

However, the SUV will face aggressive competition once other programs targeting the same niche materialize, such as Hyundai’s Boulder Concept, the Nissan Xterra, and a new variant of the Pathfinder, all of which are similarly developed on “body-on-frame” platforms.
