Government hopes to transition to clean energy in oil production

President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that the oil policy aims to establish a stable production level of 1.8 million barrels per day, while also seeking to transition to clean energy sources such as solar and wind power.

In this context, she criticized the “irresponsible” over-exploitation of Mexico’s main oil field—Cantarell—which was in operation when the country was producing 3.2 million barrels per day.

During her morning press conference, she said the goal is for this domestic production to be specifically allocated to fuel production to meet domestic demand, noting that this is possible thanks to the rehabilitation of the six refineries, the construction of the Dos Bocas refinery, and the acquisition of the Deer Park refinery.

This has made it possible to substantially reduce gasoline imports, although he acknowledged that the accident at Dos Bocas forced a temporary increase in imports.

He also pointed out that part of Deer Park’s fuel production is sold in Texas, while the rest is shipped to Mexico.
