Hughes Marks More Than 40 Years Supporting Mexico’s Satellite Development

Hughes has played a key role in Mexico’s satellite and telecommunications development for more than four decades, helping build some of the country’s earliest space communication systems and continuing to expand connectivity solutions across multiple industries.

The U.S.-based company began participating in Mexican satellite projects during the 1980s and later strengthened its presence with the opening of its Mexico office in 1993. One of its earliest contributions was involvement in the Morelos satellite system launched in 1985, which helped connect remote communities and improve national telecommunications infrastructure.

According to Hughes executives, the company also contributed to the development of bidirectional satellite communication systems used by banks, government agencies and private organizations to connect central offices with remote locations across the country. A sister company of Hughes was also responsible for building Mexico’s first five government satellites, including Morelos 1, Morelos 2, Solidaridad 1, Solidaridad 2 and Satmex 5.

Today, Hughes continues working on satellite-based broadband and connectivity solutions focused on aviation, national security and digital inclusion. The company supplies onboard connectivity technologies for aircraft operating in Mexico while also collaborating on secure communication systems for maritime and land operations.

Company representatives said Hughes is currently exploring opportunities with Mexican authorities to expand the use of satellite technologies to help reduce the country’s digital divide, especially in rural and underserved communities. The company has also strengthened efforts to expand satellite internet access in areas with limited terrestrial infrastructure.

Industry analysts believe satellite connectivity will continue gaining strategic importance in Mexico as demand rises for secure communications, remote internet access, aviation services and sovereign space infrastructure. Hughes has increasingly focused on multi-orbit satellite systems, defense technologies and advanced connectivity services as part of its long-term strategy in Latin America.
