IZZI bets on Starlink to introduce satellite internet

Grupo Televisa announced the expansion of its partnership with Starlink—SpaceX’s satellite internet company—to incorporate connectivity services aimed at the residential market. The decision is not intended to replace its fiber-optic network, but rather to complement it in areas where deploying terrestrial infrastructure remains costly or technically complex.
More than just a business expansion, this move reflects the recognition that satellite technology is no longer a niche service but has become a competitor capable of shifting the industry’s balance of power.
According to SpaceX’s 2025 annual financial report, Starlink operates approximately 9,000 active satellites, 650 of which are already dedicated to Direct to Cell—the technology that connects smartphones directly to low-Earth orbit satellites without the need for ground-based mobile infrastructure. In just one year, the company doubled the number of satellites allocated to this service.
Izzi’s move reflects a shift in perspective within the sector. Satellite connectivity is no longer viewed solely as an alternative for remote areas, but rather as a complementary technology capable of expanding coverage, reducing deployment costs, and, eventually, redefining competition among telecommunications operators.
