Medline Industries, an Illinois-based manufacturer of medical products, officially opened last week its new manufacturing facility in Mexicali, Baja California, local media reported.

The company planned a total investment of US$ 125 million for this facility dedicated to the production of surgical instrument trays, which started operations with a 600,000-square-feet footprint that is expected to double in the short term.

The new plant, located at El Desierto industrial park, will employ 3,000 workers once fully operational.

Medline also operates a production facility in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas that manufactures surgical kits. This plant was also subject to a US$ 20 million expansion last year which implied the addition of 400 job positions to the staff of 3,000 already, according to company officials who last year announced the construction of the Mexicali site.

Both plants serve markets in North America, Europe and Australia.
