Auto plants established in Mexico built 349,153 vehicles last June, a record for the month and a 0.8% increase compared to same month of 2017, according to the Mexican Auto Industry Association (AMIA).

In the first half of 2018, total production in Mexico reached 1,956,210 units, also a record and a 0.7% gain compared to same period last year.

Regarding exports, the AMIA said 260,966 vehicles were shipped to foreign markets in June, the figure represents an 8.1% increase but it doesn’t include data from Nissan, one of Mexico’s main vehicle producers and exporters in volume terms.

At the conference to show the latest production and export figures, Eduardo Solís, head of the AMIA, read a joint statement on behalf of automotive and auto parts associations from the United States, Canada and Mexico in which they encouraged their respective governments to resume negotiations to modernize the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) in force since 1994.

The official also commented that the car manufacturers established in Mexico have already held talks with the team of the future president, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

"We are pleased that the future government of Lopez Obrador is going to be respectful of the NAFTA negotiation process and that there is a desire to resume the talks," Solis added.

The AMIA groups automakers such as America’s Ford and General Motors, Japan’s Honda, Mazda, Nissan and Toyota, the Germany-based Volkswagen and the Italian-American Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA).
