New generations lead investments in CetesDirectos

Millennials and Gen Z are showing an interest in investing their money in safe instruments; with this in mind, the CetesDirecto platform reported that of its 2.9 million total users, more than one million are between the ages of 26 and 35.

Jose Ballesteros, the platform’s director of Direct-to-Consumer Securities Sales, explained that this trend is driven by young people’s desire to safely explore and test different investment options beyond what banks offer.

The 36- to 45-year-old age group is the second-largest investor group on the platform, with 751,348 people—representing 26% of all investors.

Cetes (Federal Treasury Certificates) were created in 1978 under the administration of former President Jose Lopez Portillo, but it wasn’t until 2010 that the CetesDirecto platform was launched with the goal of democratizing investments by eliminating the need for intermediaries and charging no commissions.

Cetes are government debt securities, which is why they are considered the safest investment instrument; they are offered in terms of 1, 3, 6, 12, and 24 months. However, Ballesteros notes that the preferred term among investors is 28 days, accounting for nearly 80% of investments.

Regarding the platform and app, Ballesteros did not disclose figures on how much money is allocated to maintenance or updates, but he said that the systems are updated daily and that, although the possibility of switching to a different platform to make it more user-friendly has been considered, they prefer to keep it simple, with few buttons.

Looking ahead, he anticipates the launch of a new investment product in the funds sector, which will always be linked to government securities.
