Mexico Keeps 80% of Its Exports Duty-Free

President Claudia Sheinbaum has confirmed that Mexico will not face new tariffs. This was agreed upon during the meeting with Jamieson Greer, the U.S. Trade Representative.The country will maintain the same trade terms with the U.S. and will also seek a reduction in the tariffs it still imposes on its neighbor.

Also, the president confirmed that Mexico retains the same benefits and preferential treatment under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

Meanwhile, meetings and negotiations will continue to address the tariffs the country currently maintains. Products typically exported under the USMCA will continue to be subject to a zero tariff, while exports not covered by this agreement will remain subject to the same 10% tariff as before.

It is important to remember that exports not covered by this pact regime include the aluminum, steel, and automotive sectors, as well as exports that do not comply with the trade agreement.

These new talks are a response to the new context arising from the new trade strategy promoted by the Donald Trump administration, which seeks to strengthen the U.S. economy by imposing tariffs on various countries.

Lastly, Sheinbaum emphasizes that about 80% of Mexican exports to the United States will remain duty-free thanks to the USMCA.
