Producer prices rose 2.99% year-over-year in August
The National Producer Price Index (INPP) rose 2.999% on an annual basis in August, increasing 0.06% on a monthly basis, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi). Compared to July 2026, the annual change in the index accelerated to 0.43 percentage points, up from the 2.56% recorded that month.
By economic activity group, prices for primary activities fell 1.21% monthly and 2.50% annually, while prices for secondary activities rose 0.16% monthly and 2.69% annually. Meanwhile, costs for tertiary activities rose 0.02% monthly and 4.24% annually.
The performance of the general index was found to be driven primarily by increases in the prices of gasoline, silver, gold, and crude oil.
In the primary sector, prices for agricultural, livestock, and fishery products fell 1.21% on a monthly basis and 2.50% on an annual basis. The commodity with the most significant downward impact within the sector was poultry, with a monthly decline of 19.57%, in addition to decreases in potatoes and avocados, which offset significant increases in onions and eggs.
Among secondary activities, producer prices in the mining sector posted the largest increase, at 1.71% month-over-month and 13.09% year-over-year, followed by construction, at 0.16% and 5.91%, respectively. Manufacturing industries rose 0.02% monthly and 1.70% annually, while the generation and distribution of electricity, water, and natural gas rose 0.05% monthly but fell 6.57% annually.
Tertiary sector activities saw an overall price increase of 0.02% on a monthly basis and 4.24% on an annual basis. Notably, educational services saw a monthly increase of 0.96% and an annual increase of 6.25%, and recreational, cultural, and sports services rose 2.03% monthly and 5.40% annually; the report highlights that this sector posted the highest monthly price increase among all tertiary sector activities.
