Puebla Promotes Textile and Footwear Industries
According to Governor Alejandro Armenta Mier, Puebla’s economy cannot rely solely on the automotive industry, led by Volkswagen and Audi, and must diversify by investing in sectors such as textiles and footwear.
Regardless of the outcome at the Volkswagen plant, Armenta said other productive sectors offer opportunities for economic development.
He argued that the state must move away from relying on a single industry, particularly as the automotive sector faces a crisis that could lead to layoffs.
He also highlighted textile manufacturing as a key driver of Puebla’s economy, noting that the sector is experiencing a resurgence and supplies components and materials to automotive assembly plants.
Armenta clarified that he does not oppose the automotive industry, emphasizing Puebla’s participation in the production of Olinia, Mexico’s electric vehicle project.
“Both companies (Volkswagen and Audi) are important to Puebla, but they aren’t the only ones, and it is disrespectful to other companies to suggest otherwise,” he said.
The governor also highlighted efforts by federal and state authorities to help agricultural producers in Puebla identify new markets both domestically and in the United States.
Meanwhile, textile factories are adopting more advanced technologies, creating opportunities to secure additional supplier contracts. The state is also promoting the footwear industry as part of its broader economic diversification strategy.
