Puebla Seeks to Revive the Customs Terminal at Its International Airport

Faced with the need to reactivate the cargo terminal at Puebla International Airport (AIP)—whose operations had been abandoned by the company CLA PBC Recinto Fiscalizado after 17 years—the current state government held meetings with investors to review proposals.

Since the “Hermanos Serdan” Airport, located in the municipality of Huejotzingo, was operating at only 5% of its capacity, the Secretariat of Economic Development and Labor (Sedestra), headed by Victor Gabriel Chedraui, has decided to address this underutilization.

The secretary noted that it is important for commercial flight operations to be on par with the Bonded Warehouse in terms of the receipt, handling, and shipment of goods.

He emphasized that the facility is a strategic hub for the country’s economic development as well as at the regional level, serving as a key transit point from the south to the center for logistics operations; therefore, the Puebla airport could be of great benefit for exports.

As part of the modernization projects at Puebla International Airport, and in light of this context, 12 new commercial flights will be added, along with an investment of US$59.3 million. Furthermore, there is both a need and an opportunity to increase activity at the customs terminal.

Local authorities, airport officials, customs officials, and business organizations all hope that Puebla will establish itself as a strategic hub for the economic development of the state and the south-southeast region.
