Sheinbaum reconsiders the creation of a water supply system

President Claudia Sheinbaum canceled the La Parota Dam project, and announced that, instead, there will be a new water supply system in Acapulco, Guerrero.

This project promised to supply drinking water and energy to the port region, but indigenous and rural communities opposed it due to the negative effects it would have, such as the displacement of people and the environmental damage it was causing.

The president explained that the cancellation was due to the project’s significant impact on the communities; radial wells will be built as a replacement.

The La Parota hydroelectric project—first proposed by the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) 40 years ago but revived in 2000—involved the construction of a dam on the Papagayo River. For more than 20 years, funds were allocated for technical, environmental, and geological studies, but the dam was never built.

In addition, Sheinbaum emphasized that the port—which was damaged by the hurricanes of 2023 and 2024—is being upgraded to attract tourism; the area currently has a hotel occupancy rate of 78%, according to Guerrero Governor Evelyn Salgado.
