Tesla is abandoning its Model 3 order reservation system in exchange for a process where anyone who’s willing to pay US$ 2,500 in advance gets to configure their cars right away.

Previously, a customer needed to put a US$ 1,000 deposit down to get a place in line. Once the payment is done, customers had to wait for weeks in order to receive a notification that unlocks the configurator so they can customize their cars and receive a potential delivery date.

Does who have already made reservations also must pay the US$ 2,500 deposit to move their Model 3 orders forward. Whether customers ended up paying US$ 2,500 or US$ 3,500 the deposits go toward the overall cost of the cars. However, once Tesla assigns the customer a vehicle identification number the money becomes nonrefundable. The number usually arrives within a few days after placing the order.

Orders for the Model 3 will be fulfilled in priority order based on a mix of factors including: whether or not a customer had a reservation, the date of their order, their selected vehicle configuration and the location of delivery, the company said.

Last June, Tesla finally reached its 5,000 Model 3 per week self-imposed production target despite certain controversy regarding such goals. According to the Monroney sticker in most models, 25% of the 10,000 unique parts in a Tesla Model 3 are manufactured in Mexico.
