The Port of Lázaro Cárdenas Handles Over 17.4 Million Metric Tons of Cargo

The Port of Lázaro Cárdenas handled 17,480,520 metric tons of commercial cargo in the first half of the year. This volume represents a 14% increase compared to the same period in 2025, placing Lázaro Cárdenas among Mexico’s leading ports in terms of cargo volume, and it also received 1,049 ships.

These figures highlight the port’s importance to various supply chains, with containerized cargo accounting for 49% of the total volume, followed by mineral bulk at 36% and general cargo at 5%. The remaining 10% consisted of vehicles, agricultural bulk, petroleum products, and other liquids.

In addition, the same traffic totaled 1,582,996 TEUs, a figure 7% higher than that recorded for the comparable period in July of last year. Of the total container volume, 25% came from imports, 25% from exports, and 50% from transshipment operations, highlighting the importance of Lázaro Cárdenas as a logistics hub for international trade.

In the overland transport of these goods, trucking accounted for 72% of outbound shipments, while rail accounted for 28%. This combination of modes of transportation ensures connectivity between the port complex and the country’s industrial and consumer centers.

The growth in commercial cargo, containers, and vehicles reflects the Port of Lázaro Cárdenas’s ability to serve various segments linked to supply chains. Its infrastructure, road and rail connectivity, and the coordination of the port community support its role within the national logistics system.
