Wind energy industry plans to invest US$5 billion by 2029

The wind energy sector is seeking to regain the momentum it lost during the previous administration and secure investments of up to US$5 billion by 2029.

According to Gerardo Perez Guerra, president of the Mexican Wind Energy Association (AMDEE), the various calls for proposals being issued by the federal government will allow for the installation of up to 14 wind projects over the next three years, which, if realized, will add up to 4,000 megawatts of new generation capacity to the National Electric System.

The country is facing steady growth inelectricity demand, driven by increased digitalization, the installation and expansion of data centers, and the electrification initiatives planned for the coming years—all of which make it essential to have more generation capacity.

However, Perez emphasized that, should the projects fail to materialize within the projected timeframe, it is essential that the appetite for investment not wane, either on the part of the authorities or private investors.
