Spanish solar energy developer X-Elio invested US$71 million in the construction of a new 71 megawatt (MW) photovoltaic plant in Guanajuato.

According to X-Elio, the project, whose construction is about to be done, is part of the company’s strategic plan for growth and investment in the country, which will contribute to increase the capacity of non-conventional renewable energy.

“With this new plant, we are cooperating with the Mexican government, whose goal for 2050 is for clean energy sources to provide 50% of the electricity generation combination,” said Jorge Barrendy, the company’s delegate.

With the inclusion of this plant, X-Elio will have five facilities in Mexico and is also in the process of building another photovoltaic solar power plant with 81.40 MWp of power in the state of Morelos and another of 913.71 MWp in Chihuahua.

The plant’s financing has come from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Official Credit Institute (ICO) and the Bank of Tokyo (MUFG).
