Yucatán Invests US$547.5 Million to Build a Wind Farm

The Panabá Wind Farm involves an investment of US$547.5 million for its construction, which is scheduled to begin in December. It is also expected to have the capacity to generate 252 megawatts (MW), which is equivalent to the electricity consumption of more than 300,000 households, according to a statement from the Yucatan government.

The project, which is being developed by Genux in partnership with Glencore, was presented to Governor Joaquin Diaz Mena. The wind farm will include 60 wind turbines and 85 kilometers of new power transmission infrastructure.

 The strategy aims to expand clean energy generation capacity, strengthen the power grid, and provide greater energy security for families and businesses in the state. It also seeks to boost the economy of the state’s northeastern region by creating jobs and contracting with local suppliers.

Diaz Mena confirmed that his administration will be responsible for providing institutional support to companies to streamline the development and construction of this initiative. He also added that there are 80 investment projects seeking to establish themselves in the state, all of which require a reliable electricity supply.

Meanwhile, Genux Executive Director Patricia Tatto noted that the project will allocate US$4.2 million for social infrastructure projects in Yalsihon and San Francisco, a district of Panabá, as a result of the dialogue and consultation carried out with both communities.
