Zacatecas farmers defend bean prices

The “Food for Well-being” program reported that Zacatecas has accounted for 56.4% of the nation’s total bean production: to date, 12,435 small-scale producers in Zacatecas have benefited from the purchase of nearly 98,000 tons of beans, representing a social investment of over US$154 million.

In early May, the new Operating Rules were published in the Official Gazette of the Federation, authorizing an additional purchase in the state of up to 10,000 tons of black and pinto beans, but at a price of US$931 per ton—down from the previous price of US$1,571.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development noted that 441 producers have benefited from the procurement of 1,951 tons of beans at the previous price of US$1,571 per ton, representing a social investment of US$3 million.
