SAN JOSE CHIAPA – The sustainable strategy Mission: Zero of Audi Mexico seeks carbon neutrality for its operations in 2025. The plant in San José Chiapa is an example of this mission, since there, in addition to producing the iconic Audi Q5, it has also been recorded that its Osmosis Inversa plant has treated and reused 100,000 m3 of water, that is, 100 million liters.
For the production of the Audi Q5, water and other liquids are used in various processes, such as in the anti-corrosion protection of the car bodies and in the tightness tests of the finished vehicles.
All the water used in the factory areas is combined with the rest of the liquid from other processes and social uses such as toilets or kitchens. Therefore, each drop used goes through a biological treatment process that monitors quality values to ensure legal and regulatory compliance.
In addition to the biological treatment of the water, a reverse osmosis treatment plant was built, which has returned to production 100,000 m3, equivalent to 100 million liters of water, in just over two years. With this, Audi México reduces its water footprint in the manufacturing process.
Tarek Mashhour, CEO of Audi Mexico said: “One of the important pillars in our Mission: Zero strategy is to incorporate technology that reduces the environmental impact in our operations. That is why we built the Osmosis Inversa plant to make the correct use of water, closing the cycle with its processing in our facilities, avoiding discharges to the outside,”.
The Osmosis Inversa plant has two main treatment phases, ultrafiltration and later the reverse osmosis stage where all impurities and minerals are removed for reuse in production. From the reverse osmosis treatment, water is obtained for industrial use and water with a high concentration of impurities that, through the evaporation ponds built on one side of the plant, are reduced to be able to solidify the remnants and to be able to manage them as waste complying with the applicable regulations.
Thus, Audi México avoids wastewater discharges to the outside and guarantees the correct use of water by closing the cycle inside the factory.
