Electric car charging points grew by 9.3%

MEXICO - The availability of public and private charging infrastructure for electric vehicles in the country rebounded by 9.3% in the third quarter of the year compared to the previous quarter, reaching 42,915 available connectors, according to the Electromobility Association (EMA).

Public locations for direct charging, the service mainly used for long distances, registered a 65.5% growth from 113 to 187 in the reference period.

At the end of last September, there were a total of 3,273 public chargers, or almost 2% more than those registered last June, according to the EMA Barometer. Private recharging positions rose by 9.97%, to 39,642.

Private recharging connections are located in homes, car dealerships and company yards or parking lots. In the case of the former, the growth in their number represents 6.12%, and fast charging at car dealerships rose by 16.12%.

In addition, and according to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi), sales of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles by the main brands focused on these technologies ratified their growth rate in the Mexican market during the third quarter of the year.

Compared to the previous quarter, the main brands operating in Mexico sold 8,334 electric vehicles between June and September 2024, an increase of 27 percent; in the same period, they sold 7,921 units of plug-in hybrid vehicles, an increase of 46.3 percent.

The 16,255 units that were added in the quarter in both types of vehicles represent an increase of 34%, according to the Mexico Electromobility Barometer prepared by EMA's analysis area.

In addition to making an inventory of charging stations installed in the country, the Barometer shares figures on the number of units with these technologies that have been marketed by its associates.
