AICM celebrates its 97th anniversary

Mexico City International Airport (AICM) celebrates 97 years of operations today. It is the country's main airport in terms of the number of passengers and flights it handles annually, and its connectivity with 44 domestic and 50 international destinations, through 27 airlines, five domestic and 22 international.

In 2024, it handled 45.3 million passengers and carried out 322,000 operations. As of September this year, it had recorded 33,153,934 passengers and 234,172 takeoffs and landings.

The airport terminal is the main gateway to the country's capital for domestic and foreign visitors and a strategic point for business and connectivity with the world. But not only that, it is the most important point in the national airport network, as it interconnects the regions of the Republic.

An average of 250,000 to 300,000 people pass through its two terminals every day, including travelers and visitors, and it employs more than 30,000 workers from different institutions, including service providers, private security, and shops.

The Marina Airport Group (GAM) recalled that the first landing at what was then the Central Air Port was made on November 5, 1928, by Captain Felipe H. García, aboard a Hanriot biplane that descended on runway 10/28.

“That year, an access road was built from the Mexico-Puebla highway (now Boulevard Aeropuerto), a parking lot, an aircraft platform, and two runways (05/23 and 10/28), but the work was temporarily halted.”

He noted that work resumed in 1929 through an agreement between the Mexican Air Transportation Company and the then Ministry of Communications and Public Works (SCOP). He indicated that over the past 97 years, this airport has grown in terms of facilities, flights, services, and passengers, including prominent figures from Mexico and around the world such as presidents and prime ministers, popes, artists, and millions of passengers.

He noted that various renovations and expansions have been carried out to meet the needs of its users.
