Sheinbaum negotiates with the U.S. & Canada

President Claudia Sheinbaum reported that her visit to New York to attend the World Cup soccer final allowed her to briefly discuss the USMCA negotiations with President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, noting that talks with the United States had resumed in Mexico to continue working on the agreement.

During her press conference, she explained that she had originally received only an invitation from the International Federation of Association Football to attend the match between Spain and Argentina, which she had decided to decline. However, after receiving a personal call from Trump, in which he directly invited her to attend and sit down with him and his team, she accepted.

She noted that she has a good personal relationship with Trump, even though they have differences on various issues on the bilateral agenda, but she emphasized that Mexico has always sought to maintain a good relationship with the United States.

Elaborating on the terms for resuming negotiations, Sheinbaum said that since the United States has decided not to renew the trade agreement for 16 years, it must be renegotiated annually. The idea is that this first annual negotiation will lay a solid foundation for an agreement so that, when it is reviewed annually, the focus will be solely on verifying compliance with the terms agreed upon.
