Mexico and South Korea Strengthen Aerospace and Defense Cooperation

Mexico has proposed cooperation with South Korea in aerospace engineering, defense, and security during a meeting between Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco and South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun.

The foreign ministers agreed to draft an Action Plan for 2026–2030, acknowledging the importance of developing long-term projects designed to benefit as many generations as possible in both countries.

“The meeting concluded with a commitment from both sides to strengthen bilateral ties, share knowledge, and make progress on issues related to aerospace engineering, artificial intelligence, digital governance, as well as defense and security,” the SRE stated on Monday.

The Mexican Foreign Ministry has stated in a press release that the two governments plan to sign the five-year plan when the leaders of both countries, Claudia Sheinbaum and Lee Jae Myung, meet in Mexico City next September.

According to a statement from the Foreign Ministry, Cho has announced plans to establish a Korean cultural center in Mexico, and the delegations have also discussed the creation of a bilateral scholarship program.

In addition, the importance of economic exchange is highlighted as one of the cornerstones of the relationship, with South Korea being Mexico's fifth-largest trading partner, with US$29.7 million last year.

The Mexican foreign minister added that both countries have identified innovation, artificial intelligence, and digital governance as priority areas, with the aim of moving from knowledge sharing to joint projects.
