The Mexican Air Force (FAM) aims to start manufacturing its own aircraft by next year, leveraging domestic design and technological capabilities, in addition to armoring them with weapons also built in Mexico.

General Salvador Cienfuegos, Secretary of Defense, said that the goal is to have the Mexican military industry built two 5.56 mm cannons by 2018, along with a bi-seat airplane, two experimental aircraft for basic flight training, a 50mm cannon for air-surface training, and a 7-cannon weapon for military aircraft.

Since Mexico is quickly becoming one of the main suppliers for the aerospace industry, and the sixth largest supplier of parts for the U.S., the Ministry of Economy will support development of a new aircraft, the Learjet 85, to be built in Queretaro by Bombardier.
