AHMSA invests US$ 70 million to build a 100 MW power plant
Altos Hornos de Mexico (AHMSA) announced plans to invest US$ 70 million in the construction of a 100 MW power plant in Monclova, Coahuila, in order to meet 100% of their electrical needs under a self-supply system.
“We currently cover 60% of our electricity consumption with our own plants, with this new project that will be ready by the end of 2018, we hope to meet 100 percent of our needs by 2019,” said CEO Luis Zamudio Miechielsen in a filing to stock market regulators.
Along with the power plant project, AHMSA currently works with Caterpillar in the development of a system that allows them to use natural gas (called gray gas) that comes out of their coal mines for use in its power plants, and thereby reduce even more its costs and emissions.
“We are moving forward with the project, it is just in the testing phase,” he said.
