Airbus opened a new pilot training facility in Mexico City, the first of its kind in Latin America.

Funded jointly by the Transportation and Communications Secretariat and Airbus with contributions of US $25 million and $36 million, respectively, the Airbus Mexico Training Centre will train 1,000 pilots a year to fly the A320 aircraft.

Airbus regional president Rafael Alonso said there will be a strong demand for pilots in the next two decades due to growth in the sector. “The demand will be for 44,000 pilots (worldwide) in the next 20 years, one-quarter of them in Mexico alone,” he said at the inauguration event.

The 2,000-square-meter training center is located at the Mexico City airport and has two new A320 flight simulators.
