Baja California Sur Invests US$742,000 in Agriculture

The head of the Secretariat of Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Agricultural Development (Sepada) of Baja California Sur, José Alfredo Bermúdez Beltran, reported that this year US$742,000 has been invested in agriculture, through the State Program for Agricultural and Livestock Production Support, for the purchase of tractors, agricultural equipment, irrigation equipment, and irrigation modernization, among other items.

During the 16th Regular Session of the Sectoral Subcommittee, where producers and officials reviewed the information to be included in the Fifth Government Report, the official noted that, in the livestock sector, resources have been allocated to equipment, family gardens, genetic improvement of breeding stock, and modules for cheese-making, among other productive initiatives.

In response to the drought, the state government, through SEPADA and in coordination with the Secretariat of Agriculture and Rural Development (SADER), allocated US$310,000 for the procurement of livestock feed. In addition, the state’s Livestock Law was amended to make this support a permanent measure during periods of drought.

In the area of public health, efforts were made to eradicate fruit fly outbreaks, enabling the state to achieve “free zone” status. Animal health campaigns against bovine tuberculosis and ticks are currently ongoing, as is the strategy to combat the cattle borer worm.

In accordance with the agreements reached at the session, the National Water Commission (Conagua) announced the start of eight water retention projects in Comondú—six on the La Baramonas Creek and two on the Querétaro Creek—in the Santo Domingo Valley.
