Clouds have clear for Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP) and now the company is charging ahead with its plans to expand the output of Sea-Doo watercraft and all-terrain vehicles in Mexico, according to Canadian media.
“We were a little bit worried when President Trump came to power, given that he took some pretty drastic positions during the campaign,” Chief Executive Officer Jose Boisjoli said in an interview to the Montreal Gazette. “Now we’re starting to see a timetable. We have a better idea in terms of the schedule, and the tone has softened a bit.”
BRP builds off-road vehicles in two plants located in Juarez, Chihuahua, and manufactures Ski-Doo watercraft at another facility in Queretaro. Now the company is investing about US$ 18.5 million to expand the capacity on two Mexican plants by about 20%. The company will install new equipment at both facilities by April 2017 and hire about 100 employees, Boisjoli said.
“The industry is going well and we’re winning market share, so we felt it was a good time to expand capacity,” he said. Regarding international trade, “we are much more comfortable with the situation than we were six months ago.”
