Car Sales in Mexico Set Third Consecutive Monthly Record

The sales boom in the Mexican automotive market set a new record in May with the sale of 127,100 brand-new light and medium-duty vehicles, according to preliminary figures from INEGI.
This result represents a 4.9% increase compared to May 2025, but it is also the highest volume ever recorded for the month of May.
Cumulative sales for the first five months total 627,609 units, which also translates to a 4.9% increase and the highest figure since the agency began compiling these statistics.
It is worth noting that since last March, total annual sales volume has remained at record levels, according to official data, which is voluntarily provided by most industry participants.
However, it is worth noting that these figures do not reflect the full size of Mexico’s automotive market, as several brands—including those of Chinese origin as well as the U.S.-based Tesla—do not report their monthly results to INEGI.
Therefore, it is reasonable to expect that the actual volume of new vehicles sold each month in the country is considerably higher.
In fact, it is precisely the more than 15 Chinese brands that have entered the Mexican market in recent years that are the main factor behind the growth reflected in the most recent results.
A case in point is Geely, which only began releasing its figures late last year.
The Hangzhou-based automaker revealed that last month it delivered more than 4,200 vehicles to Mexican consumers, a figure that exceeds its May 2025 results by 295%.
From January to May, the company sold more than 19,000 vehicles, representing a 279% increase compared to the just over 5,000 units sold during the same period last year.
Despite having been in the domestic market for just two and a half years, Geely already outsells brands such as Honda, Mitsubishi, Renault, and Suzuki in terms of volume.
Its compatriot MG Motor, one of the Chinese brands with the longest history in the local market, recorded a 4% increase in May with sales of nearly 4,200 units.
The subsidiary brand of Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC Motor) sold nearly 23,000 vehicles in the first five months of 2026, representing a solid 17.2% increase compared to the same period last year.
Although its growth is much more moderate than Geely’s, the results show that MG Motor has already entered a consolidation phase, now ranking eighth in market share with 3.7% of the total—a percentage that exceeds that of well-known brands such as Hyundai (3.4%) and Ford (3.3%).
In contrast, Nissan, which has been the sales leader for more than 18 years, saw a 4.9% decline in May sales volume, with 21,460 vehicles delivered.
The Japanese automaker has delivered a total of 107,820 units so far this year, representing marginal growth of 0.6% and a market share of 17.2%.
General Motors (GM), the second-largest automaker in the Mexican market in terms of sales volume, reported growth of 2.3% after selling nearly 16,000 vehicles in May.
The U.S. firm has delivered more than 82,000 vehicles so far this year, a figure reflecting a 2.7% increase compared to the January-May period of 2025.
GM is followed by Volkswagen, with cumulative sales of 68,574 units in the first five months of the year, a volume representing a 1.9% increase.
The German automaker sold 13,314 vehicles in May, marking a 5.5% increase, including its SEAT, Porsche, Audi, and Bentley brands.
Toyota, the fourth-ranked brand, sold just under 11,000 vehicles in May, marking a marginal decline of -1.2%. However, the Japanese automaker maintains 2.7% growth for the current year, with nearly 51,500 units delivered.
South Korea’s Kia remains in fifth place with sales of 9,305 units in May and a total of 45,346 vehicles so far this year, figures representing increases of 5.1% and 4.2%, respectively.
Mazda broke its losing streak with a 12.5% rebound in May deliveries, totaling 9,759 vehicles.
With this increase, the Hiroshima-based automaker has accumulated sales of 42,682 units so far this year, a negative difference of just 101 vehicles compared to last year’s result.
But when it comes to “coming back from behind,” Stellantis posted the most notable results with double-digit sales increases.
A 14.6% increase in May with 8,357 units delivered and a 17.7% increase in cumulative volume, which totaled 40,693 vehicles.
