Cargo movement by railroad companies in Mexico up 4% in 2017
Cargo traffic through the Mexican rail system increased 4% last year, going from 122 to 126.9 million tons, according to figures from the Railway Statistical Yearbook released by the Rail Transport Regulatory Agency.
In 2017, almost half of the cargo handled by rail companies operating in the country was of industrial content, 47.1% to be precise, while agricultural products accounted for 25.5% and minerals for 12.5%.
The document also highlights that most of the freight moved by rail, 79.8 million tons, were import or export goods, which represented the largest volume of foreign trade movement in the last 11 years.
Of the total foreign trade load, 61.2 million corresponded to imports and were mobilized mainly through Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, 19.6 million tons; Piedras Negras, Coahuila, 13.3 million tons and the port of Veracruz, 8.1 million tons. Meanwhile, exports volume totaled 18.6 million tons.
