After a meeting with president-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador and the ambassador of China in Mexico, Qui Xiaoqi, Marcelo Ebrard, the proposed head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE), announced that China is planning to invest more in Mexico as well as eventually participate in infrastructure projects in the country.
“What they want is to increase trade with Mexico and, eventually, participate in infrastructure projects,” said Ebrard. “They have investments here, but they are not projects they’re in 100 percent.”
With this, Mexico and China also seek to close the gap they have with each other on trade. As of today, Mexico imports computer and telephone equipment, and various merchandise to China, and mainly exports automotive parts, the imports being more than the exports for Mexico.
“We seek to reduce the imbalance that is now unfavorable, that is, reduce imports,” said Ebrard.
Ebrard also said there will be meetings with the ambassadors of Latin America, the Caribbean, Russia, Japan and Arab countries.
