Daimler Trucks aims for record production volume in Saltillo plant

Daimer Trucks North America (DTNA) announced that for this year a production goal of 56,009 Cascadia tractor trucks of the Freightliner brand has been set in its plant in Saltillo, Coahuila, 14.45% more than the 48,935 units built in 2017.

Such figure is also higher than the 53,490 units built in 2015, which is the current record of yearly production in this facility that exports 99% of its output, mostly to the United States and Canada.

In a somewhat unusual measure, the company recently called national media to a press conference to publicize this production goal, followed by a tour around the plant, which has manufactured 350,000 units since it started operations, 10 years ago.

Flavio Rivera, president and CEO of Daimler Commercial Vehicles in Mexico, stressed that the Saltillo plant was awarded this year as the company’s best truck operation in North America, due to its production times, costs and quality. The facility produces one unit every 4.4 minutes against the 12 minutes of a plant in the U.S.

For the time being, the 25% and 10% tariffs imposed by the US government on imports of steel and aluminum, respectively, from Mexico, the European Union and China have not had a negative impact on their operations, said Jorge Verastegui, production manager.
