The uncertainty surrounding the NAFTA and the tax reform in the U.S. drive dark clouds into the horizon for maquiladoras in the Mexico-U.S. border (manufacturers of electronic products, medical devices, auto parts and aerospace components), that were experiencing a golden age. The uncertainty for the revision of the NAFTA is already starting to show its effects and some companies have decided to pause their investment plans. Another factor which is keeping the maquiladora industry in alert, is the proposition of creating a new border customs fee, known as “Border Adjustment Tax” (BAT).
