Employment in Mexico’s automotive industry reached record high in 2017

In 2017, the Mexican automotive industry employed 839,571 workers both for the assembly of vehicles and for the production of auto parts, which represented an increase of 6.7% compared to a year before, according to the most recent data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).

This jobs figure is the highest in the history of the sector and represents more than double the 408,100 positions that the industry had in 2009, when it reached its lowest during the last decade due to the international financial crisis.

Industry executives say that this is due to the start-up of new automotive plants, as well as the hiring of personnel for the next ones that are about to begin operations in the country.

"In Mexico there is great talent, it is one of the main assets that the industry has in the country (...) We are global companies and where we settle is because we see great potential," recently said Honda de Mexico president, Hiroshi Shimizu, during the celebration for the 30 years of the Japanese automaker plant in El Salto, Jalisco.
