Automotive research company Kelley Blue Book (KBB), one of the most recognized firms by both consumers and the auto industry, highlighted five Mexico-made vehicles in its 10 Best Back-to-School Cars for 2017 list.

The ranking considers models that are practical, affordable and safe, but also fun and good-looking. All vehicles are priced in less than US$ 20,000 for the most affordable trim level, according to the Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price, a tool based on actual transactions of what customers are paying for a vehicle which is adjusted regularly as market conditions change.

Number one on the list for the third year in a row is the Honda Fit. “Proven value, famous reliability and five-star safety are proven parent pleasers, while the Fit’s standout style, fun-to-drive nature and class-leading cargo flexibility will satisfy students all the way to the real world,” says KBB about the unit built in Celaya, Guanajuato.

The fourth model on the list is the HR-V, also from Honda. “A subcompact SUV filled with big ideas and clever packaging. The HR-V offers more interior room than the Mazda CX-3 and Nissan Juke, and it is more fuel-efficient than the Jeep Renegade,” according to KBB. Honda builds the HR-V for the North American market in El Salto, Jalisco.

On the fifth position KBB places the Mazda 3 sedan, a car that topped this year’s list of KBB’s 10 Coolest Cars Under US$ 18,000. Mazda’s “gorgeous compact car” is also considered “the most fun-to-drive” on the list. The sedan version of the Mazda 3 is built in Salamanca, Guanajuato.

Number six on the list is the Nissan Versa Note, built in Aguascalientes. “Not to be confused with the cheaper Versa sedan, the Versa Note subcompact hatchback combines surprising roominess and versatility with appealing options and the lowest starting price of any vehicle on this list,” say the KBB report.

The Chevrolet Trax, built in San Luis Potosi, is the last car of the list. According to KBB, the fuel economy, drivability and overall practicality remain key strengths for the subcompact SUV, although higher-than-average overall ownership costs are an important drawback for shoppers to consider.
