Ford Motor Company plans to introduce a small utility vehicle based on its compact Focus sedan, with more rugged off-road styling cues than the Escape, Reuters reported in recent days citing as source Hau Thai-Tang, the executive vice president of product development and purchasing.

The new model, which will share parts with the Focus and Escape, will feature “off-road positioning and imagery” and will carry a premium price, said Thai-Tang at a presentation for JP Morgan in New York. The vehicle is an all-new model with a design intended to recall Ford’s classic Bronco off roader and it could debut in 2019 as a 2020 model.

The U.S. automaker already confirmed plans to launch a midsize Bronco, based on the upcoming Ford Ranger midsize pickup, for model year 2020. “But unlike the 2020 Bronco, which will use a body-on-frame architecture, the ‘baby Bronco’ will be more carlike since it will share its underpinnings with the Focus and Escape,” says Reuters.

It’s worth noting that local media in Hermosillo, Sonora has been speculating for a while that, starting 2020, the assembly plant that Ford operates in that city will begin to produce a new compact SUV, which, they say, is the Bronco II.

They’ve even said that the development phase has already begun at the facility and the preproduction stage is scheduled for the last quarter of 2018.
