Ford Motor Co. has decided to cancel the production project for its Focus model in Mexico and supply the North American demand of this car with imports from China. This will create savings of nearly US$1 billion and the Focus manufacture will start in China by 2019. Alfredo Coutiño, Director of Moody’s Analytics, finds this decision surprising, as Mexico and Canada have competitive advantages in the automotive production that targets the North American market. This will have no immediate impact in employment rates in Mexico and the Fusion and Lincoln MKZ models' production will continue in the Hermosillo plant.
