Grupo Modelo, which belongs to the Belgian firm Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev), is investing US$856,000 on research for barley cultivators in Mexico. The allotted amount has been spent on laboratories, sowing machines and threshing machines, for swifter processes since 2016. “This is research investment. Barley has been a very productive crop. For example, a variety called "Doña Josefa", which we have been growing more, yields one ton more than the "Esmeralda” variety, commented during an interview Marcial Ortiz Valdez, malting barley researcher for Grupo Modelo.
