Guadalajara Airport builds second runway
GUADALAJARA - The construction of the second runway at Guadalajara International Airport, led by Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP), was a feat of engineering and logistical coordination that faced significant challenges, said Martín Zuazueta, the airport's director.
He highlighted the obstacles involved in developing a project of this magnitude without interrupting daily operations at one of Mexico's most important air terminals.
During the “Safety week GAP 2024”, the director pointed out that the construction, which began in May 2021, progressed in a context where the proximity of operations on the existing runway was a crucial factor.
This challenge required meticulous planning, considering the constant flow of flights and the need to avoid operational interference.
“Working in a space with constant traffic led us to design specific routes for personnel and vehicles, and to implement strict safety measures,” explained Zuazueta.
He added that from the outset, a system of restricted and safe access for workers was established to minimize the risk of incidents in the construction zone.
The new runway, 3,538 meters long and 45 meters wide, promises to increase the airport's capacity by 50% to 70% in the long term, but its construction required rigorous management of air traffic and ground operations.
According to the executive, GAP had to coordinate airlines, aviation authorities and a team of up to 2,800 workers.
In order to do so, a safety management system was implemented to facilitate coordination among all parties involved.
