Guanajuato leads electromobility projects in Mexico

GUANAJUATO - In the recent mapping of electromobility in Mexico conducted by the Directorio Automotriz platform, Guanajuato stands out in the automotive supply chain for electric and hybrid vehicles.

This report, which covers the period from 2023 to the first months of 2024, reveals data on growth and investment in this sector.

During 2023, Directorio Automotriz identified the arrival of 96 new investments directly related to electromobility in Mexico. These investments represent a total of US$5.5 billion.

Projects are mainly concentrated in the northeastern region of the country, with 43 projects, 23 of which belong to the state of Nuevo León. However, the Bajío-Occidente region also stands out, with 32 projects, 13 of which are located in Guanajuato.

Likewise, 7 are located in San Luis Potosí and 4 in each of the remaining states (Aguascalientes, Querétaro and Jalisco).

Among the most representative projects in Guanajuato is Toyota's investment of US$328 million in its plant located in the state of Guanajuato. This investment is aimed at producing the fourth generation of the Tacoma model, including its electric hybrid version, which will officially begin production this April.

In addition, NHK Spring announced the construction of a new plant in Irapuato, Guanajuato, with an investment of US$50.5 million. This facility will produce electric motor cores for electric and hybrid vehicles.

It is worth mentioning that the state is home to one of the seven electric and hybrid vehicle assemblers in Mexico, specifically Toyota Manufacturing.

In terms of suppliers, Guanajuato is home to 16 of the 67 electromobility and electrification component suppliers in the country. In addition, 11 of the suppliers of cooling and thermal management systems are located in the state, as well as 10 of the 32 suppliers of electric powertrains.

The state is also home to companies dedicated to the manufacture of power control units and suppliers of other components for electric vehicles, such as chassis, bodywork, electrical and electronic parts, among others. Finally, 18 of the 52 raw material suppliers in the country are located in Guanajuato.
