Here’s how sales of Mexico-made cars ended up in July across the US market

Auto sales for Mexico-made vehicles in the U.S. market were marked in July by inventory issues in the Audi Q5, which saw a two-digit decline. Also in July, VW dealerships saw the arrival of the first all-new 2018 Tiguan SUV, one of the only two built-in-Mexico models to feature a third-row seat. Such vehicles are currently on high demand in the U.S.

The following report does not necessary reflects that each vehicle from certain model was built in Mexico. Automakers constantly mix domestic and overseas supplies from several countries to meet U.S. demand.

Audi 

Audi of America reported a July sales increase of 2.5% to 18,824 vehicles, led by the Q7, the Q3 and the new A5 Sportback. It was the 79th straight month of record sales for Audi of America. From January through July, Audi has sold 121,795 vehicles in the U.S., a 5.6% increase compared to the same period of 2016. Deliveries of the Puebla-made Q5 are down 15% to 4,116 units because of “inventory constraints”, the company said in its report, but no further details were provided. For the year, Q5 sales have risen 11% to 29,863 vehicles. Sales figures of the Q5 include the recently released SQ5 which is also built in Puebla.

FCA

FCA US LLC reported sales of 161,477 units, a 10% decrease compared with sales in July 2016 (180,389 units). In July, retail sales of 145,391 units were down 6% compared with the same month in 2016 and represented 90% of total sales. Sales of the Toluca-made Jeep Compass totaled 7,528 units during the fifth month since its arrival to exhibit rooms. The Dodge Journey sales, which fell more than 50% in June, are back on the rise to 6,800 units, a 7% increase. Year-to-date sales are also up 18% to 63,677 crossovers. Ram pickup sales ended flat to 39,708 units in July, and increased 6% to 290,151 trucks during the first seven months of 2017.

Ford

Ford Motor Company’s U.S. sales were down 7.5% in July, with sales of 200,212 vehicles, primarily driven by reduced fleet sales. July retail results totaled 159,492 vehicles, down 1.0% compared to last year. Sales of Ford Fiesta fell 12.5% in July to 3,582 units and dropped 5% during the first seven month of 2017 to 28,162 vehicles. The Ford Fusion sales plunged 42.2% to 13,886 units in July, and totaled 121,111 vehicles from January through July, down 29.1%. The Lincoln MKZ sales totaled 2,399 units last month and 16,741 from January through July, down 19.2% and 5.2% respectively.

GM 

GM reported July U.S. retail sales of 202,220 vehicles, down 14% compared to July 2016. Last May, production for the all-new Chevrolet Equinox started in two Mexican facilities, GM delivered 23,524 of those units during July in the U.S. market. Chevrolet Cruze sales totaled 12,278 units, including sedan and hatchback versions, down 10.5%. Silverado sales fell 15.1% to 45,966 units while GMC Sierra’s decreased 11% to 19,963 units. Mexico builds crew cab versions of both trucks. The Chevrolet Trax sales plunged 30.8% to 6,552 crossovers. Last month GM began production of the GMC Terrain in Mexico, sales figures will be included in this report starting next month.

Honda

American Honda Motor Co., Inc. reported total July sales of 150,980 Honda and Acura vehicles. Tight supplies of certain products contributed to a slight decrease of 1.2%. Total Honda Division sales decreased 1.7% on sales of 136,803 units, while Acura Division sales were up 3.7% to 14,177 vehicles. The compact hatchback Honda Fit saw a 11.6% drop in July, totaling 4,804 units. From January through July the Fit totaled sales of 31,126 units, down 5.2%. On the other hand, sales of the HR-V crossover skyrocketed 32.3% to 9,779 units. Year-to-date sales for the HR-V totaled 56,407 units, up 28.7% compared to the first seven months of 2016.

Kia/Hyundai 

Kia Motors America (KMA) announced July sales of 56,403 vehicles, 9.3% less compared to same month of 2016. Its sister brand Hyundai reported July sales of 54,063 units, a 28% decline. The Forte family reported best-ever sales of 12,022 units, up 16.6%, breaking the nameplate’s previous monthly sales record set last May. Year-to-date sales totaled 70,768 vehicles, up 12.2%. Sales of Kia Rio plunged 52.3% to 1,587 units. Year-to-date sales totaled 8,272 units, down 55.7%. Kia has officially started production of the Hyundai Accent in Nuevo Leon. Its sales totaled 2,115 units in July, down 70% compared to same month of 2016.

Mazda

Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) reported July U.S. sales of 27,089 vehicles, a decrease of 3% versus July of last year. Year-to-date (YTD) sales through July are down 2.6% versus last year, with 168,713 vehicles sold. Sales for the Mazda3 totaled 7,407 units in July, down 8.6%, while year-to-date sales totaled 47,241 vehicles, 20.6% less compared to the same seven-month period of 2016. The company combines sedan and hatchback sales for the Mazda3, but only the saloon version is built in Salamanca, Guanajuato.

Nissan

Nissan Group announced total U.S. sales for July 2017 of 128,295 units, a decrease of 3.2% over the prior year. The Nissan Division reported 117,455 units sold, down 4.1% from previous year, while the Infiniti brand sold 10,840 units, up 9%. Nissan sold 7,899 units of its Versa compact car, including sedan and the hatchback version known as Versa Note, a 33.4 % drop. Year-to-date sales for the Versa totaled 64,457 units, down 23.6%. As for the Nissan Sentra 18,724 units were sold in July, 1% more than the prior year. Year-to-date sales totaled 131,298 vehicles, down 7.2% compared to the firsts seven months of 2016.

Toyota

Toyota Motor North America reported July sales of 222,057 units including those of its Lexus brand, up 3.6% compared to same month of 2016. The Toyota division posted July sales of 193,155 units, up 3.6%, Lexus posted sales of 28,902 units, also an increase of 3.6%. The midsize pickup Tacoma, which is built both in San Antonio, Texas and Tijuana, Mexico, saw sales rise 4.8% to 17,372 units in July. For the year, Tacoma sales are up 0.3% to 111,968 units. The Yaris iA, built by Mazda in Guanajuato, totaled 3,333 units sold in July, up 10.8%. Year-to-date sales are 13.6% up to 22,081 units.

Volkswagen

Volkswagen of America reported sales of 27,091 units delivered in July 2017, a 5.8% decrease over July 2016. With 188,329 units delivered year-to-date in 2017, the company is reporting an increase of 5.9% in year-over-year sales. The whole Golf family saw monthly sales of 5,583 vehicles, an increase of 4.3%. Year-to-date sales totaled 43,830 vehicles, up 38.4%. The Jetta saw a 3.5% decrease to 11,053 vehicles, and a 4.6% drop to 66,548 units in the first seven months of 2017. VW sold 1,359 Beetle cars in July, down 11.1%. Year-to-date sales totaled 10,180 units, up 22.6%. July 2017 marked the start of sales for the all-new 2018 Tiguan, which totaled 593 units. Meanwhile VW sold 1,484 units of the outgoing version.
