Japanese automaker Honda has launched in the Mexican market a 7-passenger SUV for under 350,000 pesos or around US$ 18,920, which is the most affordable unit with a third-row seat currently available.
"With this vehicle we are opening a new segment, because until now the entry SUV for less than 350,000 pesos, was for five passengers," said Rodolfo Almada, product specialist at Honda during a press conference.
If customers were looking for a larger SUV, for seven people, they’d ran into options of 450,000 pesos (US$ 24,350) and beyond.
Honda saw that there was a group of customers with potential for this type of SUV, but that they were not accessing them because the price exceeded their budget, such as middle-class families or young people looking for their first SUV.
"So, we analyzed with which product of our global portfolio we could serve this segment, and we saw that BR-V was a very good option," said Mariano Ecija, manager of Public Relations at Honda.
The unit is manufactured in Thailand and has been on the Asian market for about four years. Mexico will be the first country in America where it will be marketed.
The unit has a 5-star rating for its performance in safety tests conducted in Japan by ASEAN N-CAP. It features front airbags for driver and passenger, three-point seat belts for the 7 seats, LATCH anchors for seats for small children in the second row, and reverse camera in the Prime version.
In addition, it is equipped with ventilated disc brakes on the front wheels with ABS system, electronic braking distribution system (EBD) and vehicle stability assistant (VSA) with traction control in all its versions.
The Honda BR-V arrives with a 1.5-liter, 16 valves, 4-cylinder i-VTEC engine in aluminum alloy, which develops 118 hp at 6000 rpm and 107 lb-ft. of torque at 4600 rpm. It is paired to a CVT transmission. The unit is only available with front-wheel drive.
